HAMPSTEAD

Discover the Hampstead neighbourhood.

A small, affluent town of 7,300 residents, Hampstead is one of the only cities in Canada with a Jewish majority. It is distinguished by its individual residences surrounded by vast gardens, a haven of greenery, trees and shrubs. Hence the name “garden city”, based on the model devised in England at the end of the 19th century. A design and a resourcefulness carefully cultivated to enhance the quality of urban life. Architectural care, including building materials and quality control. Located only fifteen minutes from downtown Montreal, Hampstead borders the City of Côte Saint-Luc to the west, Notre-Dame-de-Grâce to the south and east, and the City of Montreal. Founded in 1914, this small, affluent town was separated from the municipality of Côte-Saint-Luc to form a Garden City.

LUXURY AND QUIET

The residences are imposing, often in stone, personalized by their unique and luxurious architecture, all with gardens and double garage. There are no hotels or apartment buildings here. No disturbances to the peace and quiet either. Traffic is rather rare. The usual noises of leaf blowers and lawn mowers are forbidden during religious holidays. Even smoking on the street can cost you a $250 fine. Luxury and calm are highly sought after attributes in this city, which is pampered by its mayor. Although half of the homes are single-family residences, the city is also made up of apartment buildings, ranging from small studios to large apartments.

PREDOMINANTLY JEWISH

While in 1945, 80% of Hampsteaders were Protestant, 16% Catholic and 4% Jewish, the proportion of Jewish residents has increased significantly over the years. Today, it is estimated that nearly 85% of residents are Jewish. The city’s three synagogues reflect this denominational presence: Adath Israel-Poale Zedek Congregation on Harrow Street, Congregation Dorshei Emet: Montreal’s Reconstructionist Synagogue on Cleve Road and the Montreal Torah Center on the same street.

ALMOST EVERYTHING ON FOOT…

Life in Hampstead is pedestrian friendly. The local shops make it possible to do your shopping on foot. In fact, there are more pedestrians than cyclists pacing the thirty or so streets. Hampstead is barely 2 km long and 1 km wide. As for getting around by public transit or going to downtown Montreal, one can count on the STM bus service. That said, most residents, with an average per capita income of over $150,000, own their own vehicle. In terms of recreational facilities, the city has a park with two baseball fields, three basketball courts, tennis courts and a swimming pool.
